As at the MC5 celebration gig at the 100 Club in 2003, Dr. Charles Moore's horn section joined the show and made a remarkable reinforcement. The rich, thick sound circled the Festival Hall's high ceiling. Wayne played some superb solos - familiar riffs, but were further evolved from what I heard in Japan last summer.
Following Ramblin' Rose, Mike sang I Can Only Give You Everything.
And two guest vocalists, Handsome Dick Manitoba and Lisa Kekaula. I think this hire was a great success. While Mark Arm and Evan Dando were manifestation of Rob Tyner's complexity, intelligence, and poetic and academic lunacy, Dick and Lisa represented his power and earth energy.
Gilby Clarke sang the 3rd song, Tonight. Since DKT/MC5 was formed in 2003, cool guitarists like Nick Royale, Marshall Crenshaw, and Deniz Tek have taken the duty of the rhythm guitar player and they all did a great job. Gilby as the fourth wasn't an exception. He kept modest yet was a solid presence, playing some flashy cool solos.
Maybe Mark and Evan could have been more self-assertive in Japan. Handsome Dick, meanwhile, was active as MC, agitating the Brit audience to come out of the seats and dance in front of the stage, which soon made the space full of dancing youths. Not intimidated with his respecting MC5 senior brothers on his back, Dick struts around singing with his full strength - Lemmy with more footwork. I was very impressed. It was he that sang Kick Out the Jams. At a wonderful venue like RFH, backed by the ex-members of the MC5, it must have been euphoric moments for Dick.
In the meantime, Lisa Kekaula sang great with significant dignity. Blessed with wonderful, powerful voice, she was like Tina Turner (though it must've been said frequently), but more freaky and further energetic. Motor City Is Burning, which she sang first, was magnificent. While other contemporary female black singers focus on "dance", "appearance", or "being sexy", Lisa, in her huge wild afro, is raw and earthy. Regardless of her being young, her air of Big Ma is so uniquely attractive. Absolutely a great singer.

After an interval, with poetry reading by Sun Ra playing, DKT/MC5 took the stage and kicked off with Rambling Rose. I never get bored with the opening riff - it's so cool and eternal. Enhanced by the excellent acoustics of the hall, the sound is solid and clear, yet retaining raw energy of Thunder in the Night - this definitely is not a rock for grown-ups; this band is contemporary.
